What is at-home ketamine therapy?

Ketamine is a prescription medication that has been used in medicine for decades. At-home ketamine therapy, as offered through Couch Spaceship, means an independent, licensed physician evaluates you by telehealth and, if they decide it is appropriate for you, prescribes ketamine that you take at home.

Couch Spaceship is a referral service. We connect you with independent physicians; the physician, not Couch Spaceship, makes every clinical decision, including whether ketamine is right for you.

Who it may be for

Some physicians prescribe ketamine for certain mood conditions, often when other treatments have not been enough. Whether it makes sense for you depends on your medical and psychiatric history, your current medications, and your goals. Only a physician can make that call after an evaluation, and many people who ask about ketamine will be told it is not the right option.

Using ketamine for mental health conditions is an off-label use. Ketamine is FDA-approved as an anesthetic. Ketamine prescribed for mood conditions is not FDA-approved for that purpose, and research on it is still developing. Results vary, and some people do not benefit.

Important safety information

Ketamine is a controlled substance and is not appropriate for everyone. Possible side effects include dizziness, nausea, drowsiness, feeling detached from your surroundings, and temporary increases in heart rate and blood pressure. It can impair judgment and coordination, so you should not drive or operate machinery after a dose until your physician says it is safe.

Things that may make ketamine unsuitable, and that you should discuss with a physician, include certain heart and blood pressure conditions, a history of psychosis, pregnancy, and a history of substance misuse. Do not combine ketamine with alcohol or other sedating substances unless your physician has specifically told you it is safe. Always take it exactly as prescribed, and keep it stored securely.

Frequently Asked Questions

Only a licensed physician can decide that after reviewing your medical and psychiatric history. Couch Spaceship does not diagnose or recommend treatment. Many people who inquire are found not to be good candidates, and that is a normal outcome of a responsible evaluation.

Ketamine itself is FDA-approved as an anesthetic. Prescribing ketamine for mood conditions is an off-label use, which is a legal and common practice in medicine but means the FDA has not reviewed it for that purpose.

Ketamine carries real risks, and safety depends on whether it is appropriate for you and on following your physician's instructions. Do not drive afterward, avoid alcohol and other sedating substances unless your physician says otherwise, and tell your physician about every medication and supplement you take. Ask your physician any questions about home use before you start.
